Asia-International 2009 round-up

More than 40 Medalist Singapore players descended in Bangkok, Thailand, with the hopes of winning glory in the biggest international soft tip darts tournament of the Asia region – Medalist Asia International 2009. Joined by other Medalist darters from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, USA, France and Indonesia, everyone had a tiring but good time shooting darts over 2.5 days between Nov 6-8.

The tournament started on Fri 6th Nov morning with an opening ceremony introducing the various countries players and their representatives. After a short briefing about the tournament rules and procedures, the games started off with loud cheers from all the players gathered round the main control area.

The first event on Day 1 was the 01 medley in round robin format followed by single elimination. It was a keen fight against the various teams as only 2 teams in each group can progress to the next round. Most players were just getting acquainted with the hall and the other players. After the first round, the top teams were selected and progress on to the next round of the event: single elimination. Desmond/Ken managed to achieve the best position of top 3rd.

The second event on Day 1 was the Pirates Plunder event. This event is based on the new game Pirates Plunder. It was quite a dry day for Team Singapore as not many teams managed to proceed far into the single elimination round.

Day 2 was better for Singapore teams with more prizes rolling, especially in the second event of Super Count-up. Many Singapore teams got into the single elimination round. However, only Tee Kok Ping/Andy Choo managed to get into the B Flight SCU finals after defeating 2 other Singapore teams. The opponent in the finals was a French team who were also playing very well. The finals event was a nail-biting experience as both teams took turns taking lead almost every round. In the last round of the last game, the Singapore pair was behind by about 300 plus points. Tee needed the last 2 bulls to win the game. He missed with the first 2 darts and was behind by 251 points. He took aim at Triple-20 but shot a triple-1 instead, so the champion trophy went to the talented French pair.

Day 3 morning featured the Medley event but none got into the finals. During the night, most of the players met again for the last time for a party over drinks and food and some good music from an excellent live band. There was even a surprise marriage proposal by a Japanese player for his girlfriend on stage. That rounded off a 3 day fiesta of darts, amongst many friendly, talented darters and certainly an eye opener for our darters too.
