Post trip interview with Queen of the hills 2010

Fresh from their trip to HK to participate in the Queen of Darts event, our two Queen of Hills (Singapore) representative players shared with us the fun, the sights and their pictures in Hong Kong.

1. How was your performance during the tournament ? Did you had a good time

Carol: Had done my best for the tournament. No regrets, haha. Yes, we did had a good time, made new friends and saw how the Hong Kong lady darters play.
Elayne: I thought I played quite well and yes, I truly enjoyed the competitive atmosphere during the event in Hong Kong.

2. Share with us one of your more exciting game during the tournament ?

Carol: The most exciting game was the Super Count-Up session. 8 of us were fighting for 1 place to Top 8. every one did their best especially YY. She got her hat tricks in the last set of Super Count-up. I was so happy for her to get into Top 8.
Elayne: It has to be my 2nd singles, because I had to win it to qualify for the second stage of Super Count-up. It was a great win although I lost in the subsequent Super Count-up.

3. How do you find the skill level of the Medalist HK lady players that you face during the tournament?

Carol: They are very well trained for their Cricket game. Looking at how they played their cricket, I was shocked and impressed. The two 4 raters players tat I met, they can’t be 4 raters. Their standard should be more than 5/6 raters. Also understand that in HK, only their C flight did open out while the rest, they have to do a Master out. And therefore, their master out were very zhui.
Elayne: They are all very well rounded. They can play 01s and Crickets very well, even for the lower raters, which is extremely impressive.

4. Share with us some of the things you did with some of the local HK players

Carol: Yes, i made quite a number of new friends. We exchanged email and contact numbers. We added each other into our Facebook account and tag each other in the photos. We also had a friendly match with Citylala Team at their home ground. Their players are very supportive, they shouted and cheered together as a team.
Elayne: We definitely made a lot of new friends, and exchanged game tips with each other, and of course we enjoyed a lot of "camwhore" moments!

5. Any message you want to send out to the HK players ?

Carol: All the best for their new league… and hope to see them in Singapore soon.
Elayne: Continue your league format, it makes you an all rounder player which gives you an edge over others! Keep up the competitive spirit and your amazing cheers!

6. How was the shopping / sightseeing there ?

Carol: There were a lot of shopping malls there but it was too crowded on weekends. It was very hard to get into their malls. I manage to buy some cute flights and tips. To my surprise, I saw a set of darts named "Carol", I took some photos with the darts set.. haha
Elayne: I bought dart tips :) I just had to buy something... The darts' pubs there were also really interesting!

7. What do you think of the darts scene in HK in general ?

Carol: It was exciting. At one of the darts pub we visited, they organize games for the customers to play against their own staff.
Elayne: There is a lot of hype amongst the community which is great because it will continue to grow. Many play competitively, but there are many others that play for leisure as well.

8. Would you participate again in a future Queen of Hills event, if any?

Carol: Yes, to gain more experiences and hope to meet the Hong Kong ladies again.
Elayne: It was great fun and yes I might (especially if I don't have to pay for the airfare :P)

Singapore Queen of Hills players participates in Queen of Hills (HK) tournament

The 2 Singapore Queen of the Hills players visited Hong Kong to participate in the Queen of the Hills (Hong Kong event) and came away with many new friends, fun days shopping and fun nights having many friendly games with the local Hong Kong players.

Although our 2 players, Carol Lau and Elayne Gan, did not manage to get into the 2nd rounds of the event, they played against many Hong Kong female darters who are very talented players. Both did not auto-qualify for the 2nd round and was pitted to play against a few other players to fight for one last remaining spot in the 2nd round. However the competition was too strong and they were eliminated. But both had a good time sharing pictures and drinks with the local players.

We also met a very friendly Singaporean darter, Sharon Tan,who now works in HK. She showed us around the local darts scene and we all had a very fun time talking about Singapore food and places and going round town.

The next day,the team also played a friendly league match against one of the HK's league team - Citylala at their home ground which was very nice and comfortable. It was a case of HK team vs Singapore team. Everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves as both teams had good games especially with the fun games like Air Attack and Out on a Lim.

Soon, it was time to bid farewell to the friendly HK players with promises of exchanging visits from the HK teams. Citylala team mates - please come visit Singapore soon!

Pre-trip Interview with Queen of the Hills, 2010

This week, we took some time to sit and chit chat with the Medalist Singapore Queen of the Hills 2010 champion, Carol and Runners-up, Elayne. The two girls can be found in Forest Darts practising their darts in the run-up to their big event - Hong Kong's Queen of Hills this weekend 10th Jul.

Name: Carol Lau (right)

Flight: Slim Flight, white Japanese tips
Pouch: Using Harrow Pouch, looking for a replacement pouch

1. How did you get started in darts ?

Carol: I started in 2006, when I was involved in HDB Inter-Dept Darts Game. Later on, I was introduced to Medalist Darts by Bernard & Fariz. It was the machine and the various games, that was very fun and new to me :p

Elayne: I started throwing darts about 1.5 years ago, all thanks to Alvin (hubby). I was busy supporting Forest Boar in the league then. I was awed by the competitive atmosphere, and after several pointers from the gang, I bought my 1st set of darts. I am blessed because till today, the same gang is still teaching and guiding me.

2. Not many had expected you to win initially. What do you think are your strengths that led you to the finals /winning the crown?

Carol: Like what the rest said: I was just lucky, haha :p
I believe it was my ‘fight to the end’ spirit that persevered me to the finals.

Elayne: I believe no one expected me to win, because I had so many problems getting through the qualifier events! During the day of the finals, I told myself to focus on every throw, especially the check-out. I just had to take one step at a time and not be overly complacent after any win.

3. How many times did you sign up for the qualifier events before finally making it into the finals ?

Carol: I signed up once to support Forest Darts and to train at the same time.

Elayne: I never joined the qualifying events when it first started, until the halfway mark and then I realised how difficult 301 was! The last day of the qualifiers was totally unexpected; I had a very busy day and wasn’t planning to participate. But Lena and Alvin called me to tell me that I had to go down to Club Titan to participate in the last qualifier event and so I did. Now I’m eternally grateful to the two of them!

4. Who was your most challenging opponent that you faced during the road to the Queen of the Hills finals and why?

Carol: It was with Kae jie-jie. Everyone knew she is a very strong lady player. So "zhui" and steady. My heart was beating very fast when I was playing against her and my hands were shivering cold. I nearly gave up in the last leg!

Elayne: The toughest game I had was with Kristine, and that was during the semi finals. She is a great player, very consistent, and had a lot of supporters! I just kept telling myself to focus and to shut out all distractions. I thought it was my best performing game as well.

5. How did you feel before and after you won the semi-finals game and made it into the finals ?

Carol: Before the semi-finals game with Kae, I told myself to just perform to the best of my ability. Frankly I was quite surprised that I won. I was very happy and at the same time, excited and my heart was beating rapidly.

Elayne: A big sense of relieve, and sheer joy!

6. How did you feel before and after your finals game ?

Carol: Before the final game, I was feeling very nervous, as if butterflies in my body were like flying out at any time. After the game, the butterflies were gone and I felt very happy, which can be seen from the photos ;)

Elayne: I think I gave my all during the semi finals, and I couldn’t find it anymore during the last & most crucial finals game. Carol deserved the win.

7. What are your aspirations for the Queen of the Hills (Hong Kong) event ?

Carol: Do my very best and hope my "fight to the end" spirit and luck are with me and Elayne.

Elayne: To play my very best, and give it my all. I hope that we can come back to Singapore with some good news :)

8. What else do you plan to do in HK besides playing in the Queen of Hills event ?

Carol: Shopping? Haha. I would like to visit 黄大仙 temple and the darts shop there :p

Elayne: Definitely watch the World Cup Finals! And to eat dim sum!

9. As Medalist Singapore Queen of the Hills 2010 now, what advice do you have for new female darters who are just starting out on Medalist darts now ?

Carol: I am still not there yet to be able to give good advice. For me, I try to train more and throw more. It took me a long time to get my throw together. Most importantly, don’t give up. Have the "fight to the end" spirit.

Elayne: Have a lot of fun, and never say you can’t do it until you have thrown all 3 darts. It’s all about the board and yourself.

Let us all wish the 2 ladies the very best of luck and good darts. They will be traveling to Hong Kong this weekend to play in the Queen of Hills event scheduled on 10th July. Watch this blog to get the latest news.

Carol crowned as Queen of the Hills 2010

In the first all-girls Medalist event, Carol Lau of Forest Darts was crowned as the Medalist Queen of the Hills 2010. She came out tops in the event which saw 16 ladies competing strongly in a one-night finals event. The 1st runner up was Elayne Gan, also of Forest Darts, while 3rd place went to Kristine Lim.

The event was nail-biting as all the ladies played extremely well to try to secure a chance to the top spot. In perhaps an unusual night, it was an almost all-girls night at Forest Darts as more girls came out to support their girlfriends than the guys.

The top 2 champions for Queen of the Hills event will now be traveling to Hong Kong in late June to represent Singapore in Medalist Hong Kong's Queen of the Hills tournament. Congratulations to the winners!
